OTTAWA (CIS) – University of Alberta hockey player Monika Moskalski and University of Quebec at Montreal soccer player Moctar Diassiguy are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 16, 2011.
Moskalski, a fourth-year physical education and recreation student from Edmonton, tallied four points in two games last weekend as the Pandas kicked off conference play with an impressive road sweep of defending Canada West champion Manitoba, in Winnipeg. The former NAIT forward was a difference maker in Friday’s season opener as she registered a hat trick in a 4-3 win, before adding an assist on the game-winning goal in a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Alberta, which was ranked fourth in the inaugural CIS Top 10 on Tuesday, plays a two-game set against No. 6 Calgary this weekend.
Soccer players Karolyne Blain of Cape Breton and Éva Thouvenot-Hébert of Montreal, as well as Queen’s rugby player Kayla Roote were also nominated for the women’s award.
Diassiguy, a master’s student from Paris, France, scored three of UQAM’s four goals to help the Citadins (2-3-4) claim four out of a possible six points against two of the top teams in the Quebec conference. The 23-year-old striker tallied once on Friday night in a 2-2 draw with perennial powerhouse Montreal (5-2-1) and then accounted for all the scoring in a 2-0 shutout of reigning RSEQ champion and nationally fifth-ranked Laval (6-2-1) on Sunday. With three games left in the regular season, the Citadins are in fifth place in the RSEQ standings, only one point out of a playoff spot.
