ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athletes of the week (#18): Cape Breton’s Keough, Lakehead’s Dinkins honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Basketball players Alison Keough from Cape Breton University and Bacarius Dinkins from Lakehead University are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 31, 2016.
Keough, a third-year science student from Marion Bridge, N.S., averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game as she helped the Capers improve to 9-4 in league play thanks to three home wins in six days. The 20-year-old forward kicked off her remarkable week last Tuesday with a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double in a 69-59 defeat of StFX, added 14 points and nine boards on Saturday in a 94-52 domination of UPEI, and was at her best on Sunday with a spectacular 21-point, 17-rebound effort in a 63-50 victory over these same Panthers. Keough, an AUS all-star in each of her first two campaigns with Cape Breton, currently ranks fourth in the country in scoring (19.2 points per game) and second in rebounding (10.5 rpg).
McGill track and field standout Helena Reinfels, Windsor mid-distance runner Stefanie Smith and Brandon volleyball player Shanlee McLennan were also nominated for the women's award.
Dinkins, a fourth-year general arts student from Jonesville, Florida, was the top scorer on both nights as the Thunderwolves (6-5) upset then nationally fourth-ranked McMaster (9-4) twice at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound power forward was simply dominant in Friday's series opener with 27 points and 15 rebounds in a 73-67 win. The following night, Dinkins added 19 points, six boards and four assists but, more importantly, he stepped up his game when it counted the most, scoring 11 points in the final quarter as Lakehead erased a late 10-point deficit to steal a 74-72 victory.
